Here are some of the special events planned for the conference:
San Francisco Libraries Tour, Thursday
We have the delightful opportunity to visit several independent and public school libraries in the Bay Area on Thursday. Transportation is on your own. Details of options.
First Timers' Meeting, Thursday, 4:45pm – 5:15pm
First time at the conference? Gather to meet other newbies and learn the ropes from two longtime CSLA veterans. Join Past Presidents Janice Gilmore-See and Jane Lofton for tips on how to make your first conference a rewarding experience. Room: Harbor B
Opening Session and Keynote, Friday, 8:00am-9:15am
Michelle Luhtala on “Transforming Libraries in Transitional Times”
Hear Michelle Luhtala, the library department chair at New Canaan High School (CT) and professional learning facilitator of the edWeb.net Emerging Tech for School Librarians Community, share how we can transform libraries. Room: Grand Pavilion EFG
Centennial Gala, Friday 7:00pm-9:00pm
Delaine Eastin, Guest Speaker
Join us for a once in a lifetime event as we toast the 100-year anniversary of the California School Library Association. Enjoy bubbly and dessert in the Poolside Pavilion. The program includes guest speaker Delaine Eastin, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, chair of the Assemly Education Committee, and a life-long advocate for dynamic school library programs. Many other special guests will also attend. We’ll unveil an exciting digital timeline of our history containing key events, videos, and photographs, plus downloadable documents of original correspondence and publications. We will also all participate in a commemorative photograph. Space is limited, so reserve early. Your $10 ticket includes dessert, one drink, and your limited-edition commemorative champagne flute. CSLA is pleased to present four (4) author panels this year. Panels include:
- California Stories in Children’s Literature: with Robert San Souci, Tony Robles, N.H. Senzai, Virginia Shin-Mui Loh Hagan, and Jeri Ferris; with moderator Lewis Buzbee. Saturday, 9:00am-9:50am

- Picture This – Learning Through the Art of Picture Books: with Kathryn Otoshi, Deborah Rose, Patricia Newman, and Doug Hansen; with moderator Susan Gal. Saturday, 3:00pm-3:50pm

Legislative Session, Saturday, 2:00pm – 2:50pm
Saturday’s Legislative Meeting will feature Bob Wise, Former West Virginia Governor and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, who will bring great insight into what is happening in state and federal government related to education.
Wise is president of the Alliance for Excellent Education (the Alliance), a nonprofit organization that has become a national leader for reforming the nation’s high schools so that all students graduate from high school prepared to succeed in college and a career. Room: Grand Pavillion EFG
California Young Reader Medal Banquet, Saturday, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Lisa McMann, Guest Author Speaker
Best-selling author Lisa McMann’s story The Unwanteds is the winner of the 2014 CYRM medal for Intermediate Books, receiving thousands of votes from children all over California. We are delighted to have Ms. McMann at this year’s CYRM banquet to accept her CYRM award. The student speaker is Ilan Rosenbaum from Crocker Middle School in Hillsborough, CA.
Banquet attendees will also be treated to an author or illustrator seated at every table, and they will be signing their books before and after the banquet from 6:00PM-6:45PM and 9:00pm-9:45pm.
The banquet requires purchase of a $75 banquet ticket. Room: Poolside Pavilion
The Banquet will be following by signings for attending authors at 9:00pm, also in the Poolside Pavilion.
Closing Brunch and Keynote, Sunday, 10:00am-12:00 Noon
Shannon McClintock Miller, Keynote Speaker on "Be the Change You Want to See! Create the Future Now"
Shannon McClintock Miller, teacher librarian, technology integration specialist, author, and educational consultant, will share how we can make the changes we want and need in libraries and education. Room: Grand Pavilion EFG
Calif. School Library Foundation Education Fund Drawing
The CSL Foundation drawing supports professional development for school library workers and scholarships and advocacy for California school libraries. Tickets can be purchased at the hospitality table on Thursday and Friday.
Drawings will be held at these times:
Thursday 7:00 pm in the Exhibit Hall at the CSLF Booth.
Friday 10:30am, 2:00pm and 3:45pm in the Exhibit Hall at the CSLF Booth.
Saturday 5:30am during our Section Meet and Greet Session.
Sunday 11:45am during our Closing Session, Keynote and Brunch.
